RICHARD HUNT
I started with the idea of creative writing years ago, with a brief 3 hour flurry of actual writing, sitting at a desk, somewhere in the outskirts of Birmingham some time in 1994. It's only since moving to Liverpool recently that I've stretched things away from inspiration to something akin to perspiration. I did an evening course at M.A.D., followed by the excellent StageWrite Development course for budding playwrights at the Royal Court. My submission as part of this course was an adaptation of Gogol's short story The Nose, but relocating the anatomy to an altogether more intimate setting. You've probably guessed the title (and it's the D-word, not the C-word, in case you're wondering). I persist with this endeavour, giving it a good polishing whenever I get the chance. The play that is, not the....
I have written several other plays, including a historical piece imagining what it would have felt like to be beheaded during the French Revolution; and an updating of Shakespeare's favourite love story, set in the fraught environment of the GB News studio, Reformeo and Julileft, a Tragic Parody.
And my breakthrough has come, being one of the 7 playwrights chosen for the 2026 Stocking Fillers extravaganza. A tale of love and redemption set on the flyover of the M62's Burtonwood Services, where you get to meet the real power behind the Christmas throne.
Liverpool's good to writers.
